Project Highlights

Culture and Heritage Studies

Adaptive Use of Mei Ho House Research (2007)

Mei Ho House is a historic building in Shek Kip Mei which will be renovated in accordance with Government regulations. Powersoft was commissioned by Sham Shui Po District Council to conduct various focus groups to collect the views from local residents and professional groups on their opinion on revitalization. This study also aims at proposing a feasible plan for the perusal of SSPDC.

Study on Revitalization of Historic Buildings (2008)

In response to rising concerns regarding the conservation of cultural heritage, the HKSAR Government commissioned Powersoft to conduct a research study on global outreach methods for the preservation of historic buildings. Interviews were conducted with government officials, concern groups, academics, the business sector and the media to understand the advantages and disadvantages of various policies in Beijing, Copenhagen, London New York City, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver. This study aims at providing the evaluation of the overseas experience and proposes a practical revitalization scheme under the Hong Kong context.

Education-related Studies

Study on the Experience of Hong Kong Secondary Schools in the Teaching and Learning of National Education (2007)

In 2007, Powersoft was commissioned by the HKSARG to organize a series of focus group sessions, interviews and qualitative research to review secondary school student’s perception of national education in Hong Kong and to evaluate potential methods for improving national identity through civic education programs.

Non-local Higher Education Program Research (2008)

In response to the increasing popularity of non-local higher education program (NLHEP), Powersoft has been commissioned by Job Market to conduct an exploratory study to find out students’ evaluation on these courses. This study aims at constructing an NLHEP Quality Index listing out the factors affecting students’ evaluation on NLHEP, their respective weights of importance and the ratings of the courses. Further focus group studies will be carried out to verify the findings from the quantitative approach.

Youth-related Studies

Youth Policy for Future Hong Kong (2007)

Accounting for 13% of Hong Kong’s total population, youths are undoubtedly the major stakeholders and main drivers for building the future of Hong Kong. However, there is no single youth policy to accommodate their abundant interests and needs. Against this backdrop, the aims of this project are twofold; to recapture the whole picture of ‘youth policies’ and to draw contextual data via focus groups discussions to evaluate whether the current ‘youth policies’ are working quickly, effectively and in an organized way.

Youth Participation in Cyberspace Hong Kong (2007)

In response to the increasing internet usage among young people and the boom of e-politics, we have been commissioned by SynergyNet to conduct a study on youth participation in cyberspace in Hong Kong. By collecting data through an online platform, this quantitative research aims to investigate the internet usage behaviour of young people in Hong Kong.

Competitiveness Studies of Hong Kong

Youth in Excellence (Polling) (2007)

Staged in time for the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, this project aims at determining the perception of the comparative competitiveness among Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese university students. New World Development commissioned us to conduct a quantitative survey involving more than 2,000 respondents. This study found that more than 60% of Hong Kong university students agree that they will be surpassed by Mainland students in 10 – 20 years. A press conference was organized and research results were widely reported and discussed by media in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macau and Singapore.

Study on Integration of Professionals in Mainland China (2008)

There are increasingly more professionals in Hong Kong travelling to and from Mainland China for their career development. However, many of them find it difficult to integrate with Mainland China because of their different accreditation systems across two places. In this quantitative research, Powersoft interviews university students from various faculties of different universities to find out their views on professional integration with Mainland China. This study also aims at proposing a feasible scheme for later perusal of various authorities.

Public Administration and Public Policy Studies

Population Policy Research (2006)

Responding to the Sustainable Development Unit of the HKSAR Government’s document on population policy, Powersoft was commissioned to organize a series of focus group studies and online polling sessions. We applied the findings to disseminate information and arouse youth’s interest and consciousness of population policies such as family and social needs, quality of life, retirement, retention of talent, etc.

Sham Shui Po District Council Research (2006)

In accordance with the initiative announced by the Chief Executive (CE) in his Policy Address of 2005-2006, we were commissioned by the Sham Shui Po District Council (SSPDC) to determine if their existing resources (e.g. manpower, financial, etc.) are capable of synergizing with the proposed District Facilities Management Committee (DFMC) to achieve effective and participative district management. This study aims at exploring the expectations of stakeholders (e.g. Sham Shui Po residents, facilities-users, etc.) on the proposed DFMC to establish consent among community.

China and International Studies

The Matrix of Diplomacy: Internal Diplomacy of Mainland China and Hong Kong (2007)

Under the “One-country, two-systems” model, the Hong Kong SAR, as the most democratic and capitalist city in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), acts as a semi-independent political and economic body. To a certain extent, the relationship between these two governments cannot simply be considered as a state-province relationship. Hence, while internal diplomacy approach continues to puzzle both government officials and academics, both ‘states’ are faced with increasing social and economic cooperation. This project aims to deconstruct the puzzle by conducting comparative studies with models of similar backgrounds and by studying China’s state-province approaches and international relations to approximate the internal diplomatic relationship.

China Blind Spot” Research (2009)

It has long been criticized that students in Hong Kong are lacking in their knowledge and understanding on Mainland China. In this study, Powersoft was commissioned to conduct a quantitative survey to gauge their understandings on different aspects of Mainland China; like political-, social-, cultural-, economical- and entertainment aspects. A press conference will be held to release the results and raise the awareness of the general public.

Event Management

Youth Engagement Platform (2006)

In his Policy Address of 2005-2006, the Chief Executive (CE) recognized the significance of social participation, especially the participation of youths, in public affairs in the pursuit of effective governance. Youth engagement in public affairs not only empowers youths’ influence on the socio-economic advancement of their societies, through which youths gain self-fulfillment, but also, in view of politics, the effective expression of youth opinions and consensus on public policies can also enhance the capacity of governance and legitimacy of the HKSARG. In this regard, an unconventional platform has been formed to consolidate youth representatives from different districts, affiliations, professions and backgrounds, and to articulate youth interest and pulse.

Youth in Excellence (Model Government Summit) (2007)

In order to raise the awareness of cross-border cooperation between Hong Kong and Mainland China, New World Development commissioned Powersoft to launch the first Model Government Summit in Hong Kong. The Summit invited students from Hong Kong and Mainland China to present their ideas on the advantages of cooperation between Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The event was reported widely in the media and was featured in five episodes of the radio program “Civil Society” of Radio Television Hong Kong.

2008 Olympic Torch Relay Supporting Group (2008)

During the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Hong Kong, various Non-Government Organizations have volunteered to organize a series of functions welcoming the Rely. Powersoft has been commissioned by the Supporting Group to prepare the content of the official special Magazine Meta-Torch, discussing the various views on Olympic Games from social sciences perspectives. Powersoft has also helped arranged the distribution of the magazine.
